Today has felt a bit more like normal life, a quiet day when I've had a chance to sort out the book and paper mountains which have grown stealthily while my attention has been elsewhere. It has been unusually sunny today after this summer of relentless rain, with a distinct feeling of autumn. I've enjoyed having time to spend with Chicken and Ziki- and can only hope they take the same view. I've been delighted too to read the comments from fellow-corvid lovers as I have the splendid letters I've been sent, including one with a most delightful photograph of a young lady with a baby magpie sitting contentedly on her head.
By now, Chicken's almost past the period of moulting and, like Ziki, is beginning to look magnificent again. Ziki spends more and more time preening himself and bathing and the other day, gave forth three extremely surprising loud and distinctly crow-like shouts.
Now, I have to read the many elements of the book-mountain, among them 'The Wisdom of Birds-An Illustrated History of Ornithology' by Professor Tim Birkhead, a gorgeous book which is bound to be as irresistible to other people who like birds, as it was to me. I don't think it's published until next month but I was lucky enough to find an advance copy in the bookshop at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
On Thursday, I hope that my own choice of 'Ten Best Books'-on the subject of birds-will be on the Guardian's website.

Just to say that I bought your book "Corvus" for a friend's birthday last Saturday. She is a bird lover and has reared a few abandoned ones herself. She is absolutely enthralled with your book and is staying up far too late at night to read it. Thanks for such a super read!
Esther! Half the world away and almost half a century since I knew you, I read about Corvus in the Guardian Weekly. Crows and Ravens punctuate my days here in the Pacific Northwest. E-mail me?
Thank you so much for such a beautiful book. I bought it after reading an excerpt in the Telegraph and I haven't been able to put it down since. Your care, love and respect for your birds is wonderful. Please keep us informed about Chicken and Ziki.
Dear Esther,
I am a "corvus lover": I've helped all sorts of corvids throughout my life and managed to get a sort of balance among all types of birds by feeding them all, although crows are very naughty towards magpies and jays... please write more books on this topic, people need to know the "light" side of such wonderfully intelligent and affectionate birds! thank you Francesca

Thanks for your book given by my mother now 91 who took the picture of me and Jim long ago. Now I'm visiting her in the Highlands, and we have a home in a village in Corfu called Ano Korakiana (crow's nest). What comes round. Happy New Year 2009
Hello! I live in Corsica and have just translated the Corvus excerpt published by the Telegraph.uk.co for a French forum dedicated to corvids.... I tried to be as true to your style and words as possible... Everybody wants to read your book!!! We are about 200 members, all corvid freaks, having rescued one or more, and living true happiness with them... We all recognize ourselves in your words.. Is there a french version to be released? Please, please, please!!!!
Thank you for your wonderful writings!
Best regards,
Aylavero.
Ouups! Sorry! Nearly 700 members!!!

Esther! Thank you for the book. I haven't finished it yet and I dread the time I will. Yesterday I cried my eyes out when Spike died, today I am trying to move on.
Please write more on this blog, I am so curious about all your birds. I haven't rescued any myself (there is something to be thankful about, not meeting these poor fledglings anywhere - maybe here, in Ireland, they don't need us?) but I do, which I know, is very selfish of me, hope that if any bird ever needs any help I will be the one finding it.
I also promise to let you know if I can find rubber mice anywhere here. Please say hello from me to all your birds. Ula
